A-lister Stephen King, who has achieved somewhat of a demi-god status for his 20th century literary contributions, has made a rare cameo in the most unlikely of venues– Playboy Magazine. His new poem, “The Bone Church” appears in the November 2009 edition, and there has been quite a bit of literary buzz surrounding its appearance. King commented to The Guardian that the poem comes from the period of time surrounding the release of his first novel, Carrie, when “everything seemed to be going wrong”:
When I couldn’t sleep, in that black hole of the night when all your doubts and fears and insecurities surge in at you, snarling, from the dark – what the Scandinavians call the wolf hour – I used to lie in bed alternately wondering if I shouldn’t throw in the creative towel and spinning out masturbatory wish fulfilment fantasies in which I was a successful and respected author. And that’s where my imaginary Playboy interview came in
-Stephen King
But as surprising as it may seem, Playboy Magazine is no stranger to musings from literary heavyweights–publishing short stories by icons such as Margaret Atwood, John Updike and Vladimir Nabakov. Click here to check out the poem (that is, if you’re too scared to go out and buy a copy).
